About The Position

Vetco, a division of Petco, offers independent veterinary contractors flexible, appointment-based relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care Hospitals. Veterinarians select their shifts online, with no minimum or maximum number, and set their own rate for each shift. Weekday and weekend hours are available. Veterinarians may continue other practice activities outside Vetco shifts, and there are no agency fees. Trained staff handle clinic operations so veterinarians can focus on patient care. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with policy, product, and clinic updates, as well as a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Vetco Vaccination Clinics offer wellness examinations, preventive vaccinations and medications, heartworm testing, and microchip insertion. They do not provide surgeries, emergency care, or sick visits. Clinics are located inside Petco retail locations, and trained staff manage operations, transactions, and safe pet restraint.

Vetco Total Care Hospital shifts include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. Veterinarians review case comfort levels with the area medical director before shifts. Hospitals have digital patient records, surgical suites, handheld ultrasound imaging, digital and dental X-ray, radiograph interpretation AI, and on-site labs. Hospital shifts do not involve overnights or emergency on-call. Vetco locations provide veterinary care in 48 states, with additional locations opening soon.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
• State veterinary license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Nice To Haves

• DEA registration in good standing is preferred for full-service Vetco Total Care Hospital relief shifts.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during selected relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care Hospitals.
• At vaccination clinics, provide wellness examinations, preventive vaccinations and medications, heartworm testing, and microchip insertion.
• At Total Care Hospitals, provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, as appropriate for the veterinarian’s comfort level.
• Review the comfort level of hospital cases with the area medical director before shifts.
• Comply with applicable local, state, and federal mandates.
