About The Position

Vetco Total Care, a division of Petco, is seeking independent veterinary contractors to provide relief shifts at Vetco Total Care Hospitals. The role supports the company’s mission to make high-quality veterinary care more accessible to pets and their families. Veterinarians choose shifts through flexible online booking, with no minimum or maximum number of shifts, and set their own rate for each selected shift. Weekday and weekend shifts are available, and veterinarians may continue other practice activities outside their Vetco shifts. No agency fees apply.

The appointment-based model is designed to manage patient traffic and support timely departures. Trained, experienced hospital staff manage operations so veterinarians can focus on patient care. Relief shifts include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. Before shifts, veterinarians partner with the area medical director to review case comfort levels. Hospitals have digital patient records, a surgical suite, Butterfly IQ+ handheld ultrasound imaging, digital and dental X-ray, Vetology Radiograph Interpretation AI, and on-site labs. Shifts do not include overnight work or emergency on-call duties.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions.
• DEA registration in good standing.
• Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

• Provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures during relief shifts.
• Partner with the area medical director before shifts to review comfort levels for cases.
• Deliver veterinary care and a positive patient experience.
