About The Position

Acute General Medicine nurses care for medically complex adult patients in a fast-paced acute care environment. The Registered Nurse provides comprehensive, evidence-based nursing care to adult medicine patients with a wide range of conditions, diagnoses, and comorbidities. Depending on the unit, patient populations may include patients requiring epilepsy monitoring, oncology-related care, ketamine treatment, specialty post-surgical care, and management of other high-acuity medical conditions. The role involves ongoing patient assessment, recognition of changes in clinical condition, collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary team members, coordination of care plans, support for safe transitions, and education for patients and families. Nurses may also participate in shared governance, practice councils, quality initiatives, and committees, and may pursue opportunities as preceptors, mentors, charge nurses, or future leaders. The position uses clinical technologies including Epic EMR, Pyxis medication systems, and Alaris infusion pumps. Acute General Medicine includes seven inpatient units: 3 East, 3 Central, 3 West, 3 North, 4 North, 4 Central, and 6 Central. The service line offers exposure to higher-acuity medical patients and opportunities to develop assessment, prioritization, and clinical decision-making skills in an academic medical environment. UVA Health describes a collaborative nursing culture, supportive staffing, professional development resources, structured onboarding, residency support, and extended orientation for nurses transitioning into the specialty. Relocation assistance may be available for qualified candidates.
