Registered Nurse (RN)- Nights
About The Position
NaphCare is hiring full-time night-shift Registered Nurses to provide healthcare to individuals incarcerated in the Santa Cruz County Jail in Santa Cruz, California. The RN works in a controlled environment where security is a priority, alongside correctional officers and other medical professionals. The role includes conducting assessments, administering medications, managing chronic illnesses, and responding to emergencies. New graduates are encouraged to apply and will receive training in correctional healthcare. The RN helps provide quality care that protects patients’ rights, dignity, and health. Responsibilities include initial screenings and assessments, direct patient care and triage, care planning and coordination, treatment of acute and chronic conditions, emergency response, patient education, adherence to security protocols, and maintenance of accurate medical records.
Requirements
- Hold a current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in California.
- Hold an active BLS/CPR certification; American Heart Association certification is required.
- Know nursing practice principles and techniques, occupational health and safety standards, infectious disease management, applicable healthcare laws and regulations, and procedures for direct healthcare services.
- Be able to maintain the confidentiality of proprietary and confidential information.
- Have excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Have a flexible schedule and availability to work overtime when needed.
- Demonstrate integrity and professionalism, and adhere to a Code of Conduct and facility correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
- Pass the facility’s criminal background check and drug screening.
- Be able to stand for long periods; lift and move patients up to 50 pounds; bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks such as CPR while maintaining balance and endurance throughout a shift.

Responsibilities
- Perform initial health screenings and physical assessments of newly detained individuals.
- Monitor and document patient health, including vital signs and medical histories.
- Provide direct patient care; triage and assess patient needs; develop care plans; and coordinate services.
- Manage acute and chronic conditions, including asthma, hypertension, and diabetes.
- Respond to medical emergencies, provide first aid, and ensure timely transport to appropriate healthcare facilities.
- Educate patients on preventative care, healthy lifestyle choices, and substance abuse prevention.
- Follow correctional facility security protocols and collaborate with correctional officers and healthcare professionals to support patient safety and well-being.
- Maintain accurate medical records, document treatment plans, and report relevant information.
