About The Position

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse participates as an active member of the Nursing Team and provides preventative and supportive care based on each patient’s individual needs. The nurse assesses patients on admission and continually thereafter according to patient needs, changes in condition, or unit and department standards. The nurse advocates for patients and their families or significant others regarding decisions affecting the plan of care, and develops, implements, and modifies that plan according to the patient’s progress. The role requires knowledge of disease processes, treatments, interventions, and responses, with care tailored to age specificity and each patient’s needs, condition, impairment, or disability. The nurse reviews physician orders, transcribes them accurately to the MAR, initiates STAT orders immediately, and coordinates patient transfer or discharge planning with the health care team and the patient’s family or significant other.
