About The Position

Reporting into the Director of Operations, the Quality Assurance Manager will execute corporate quality standards, specifications, and processes at the brewery level to meet the company vision, mission, and values, working with regional Supply Chain, Operations, and the National Quality Manager to achieve these standards. The role involves executing proper quality control and quality assurance testing throughout the beer manufacturing process to ensure quality standards are maintained, mitigate non-conforming product, and reduce the possibility of product withdrawals or recalls. This position directly supervises approximately 6-8 QA Laboratory Technicians and is located in Guelph, ON.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of food manufacturing experience (preferably in a brewery environment) or pharmaceuticals, in a quality role, including at least 3 years management experience
  • Knowledge of brewing industry laboratory (microbiological, analytical, packaged product) equipment & procedures required
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of food safety, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), and best quality practices.
  • Leadership skills to oversee work of staff and provide change management to same
  • Working knowledge of statistical principles and tools
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to create reports and deliver presentations
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio)

Nice To Haves

  • Food Science considered an asset
  • Experience with Quality Management Systems and FSSC 22000 Global Standards an asset.
  • Experience in a unionized environment considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Work with National Quality Manager to ensure key performance indicators, scorecards and feedback processes are in place at the brewery to assess quality performance
  • Work with National Technical, Regional Supply Chain, Operations, and any other necessary departments to ensure existing and new quality assurance and technical standards are communicated and implemented in the brewery
  • Provide technical advice/support to brewery staff as required (e.g., non-conforming product situations, withdrawal/recall recommendations, policy implementation/ changes, audit corrective actions)
  • Execute sensory program using approved methods and protocols
  • Ensure manufacturing practices comply with national, provincial, and international legislated requirements and industry standards.
  • Work with regulatory agencies (e.g., Canadian Food Inspection Agency) as situations require
  • Communicate any events/issues that affect the overall quality of the product to senior management
  • Conduct regular site performance reviews with the National Quality Manager in other regions to assess performance against standards and objectives
  • Develop and maintain a Food Safety implementation plan to meet standards and requirements to ensure compliance both site specific and nationally
  • Work as part of leadership team to develop the regional Brewery and Quality strategies, ensure alignment with national quality assurance strategy and create and support an implementation plan at the brewery level
  • Align short- and long-term goals for area to Quality national strategy to achieve strategy, plans, and overall business objectives.
  • Participate in the regional capital expenditure process to allocate funding on a priority basis to meet both short- and long-term product quality and production objectives.
  • Identify potential disruption to production scenarios via quality metrics- QIS (analytical, micro, sensory data), NCCRS Web (national consumer complaint data) and initiate action to mitigate any risks, or refer to National QA Manager for resolution.
  • Provide monthly reporting to regional stakeholders
  • Develop a food safety implementation plan for the brewery that is aligned with the National strategy and work with Regional Supply Chain, Operations, and other departments (e.g. Logistics and Warehousing) to coordinate implementation and ensure continuing compliance.
  • Develop and manage the annual regional QA budget and business plan, ensuring alignment with National Quality business objectives.
  • Manage QA department capital expenses
  • Perform monthly analysis for budgeting
