About The Position

The City of Bellflower is seeking an organized, creative, and energetic professional to join our Parks and Recreation Department as a Recreation Coordinator. This exciting opportunity plays a key role in planning and delivering many of the City's premier community events, providing project coordination and administrative support to the Recreation Manager, and supervising and coordinating the City's Park Patrol program. The successful candidate will coordinate event details from logistics, décor, vendors, entertainment, and guest experience to transporting equipment and creating welcoming, visually appealing event environments that leave a lasting impression. In addition to coordinating City events, this role oversees the operations of the Park Patrol program, including scheduling staff, providing leadership in the field, resolving customer service issues, and helping ensure City parks remain safe, welcoming, and well maintained for the community. Success in this role requires exceptional organization, initiative, sound judgment, and outstanding interpersonal skills, along with the ability to build positive relationships with City staff, community partners, elected officials, volunteers, vendors, and the public. Requirements

  • Equivalent to the completion of an Associate’s degree or equivalent education from an accredited educational institution with major coursework in recreation or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of recreational programming experience.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license and insurability at regular rates for the City’s automobile insurance.
  • Ability to plan, oversee, coordinate, review, and evaluate recreation and/or community services program operations and activities, as well as staff, contractors, and volunteers.
  • Ability to supervise lower-level staff and volunteers effectively; train and evaluate lower-level staff.
  • Ability to understand the organization and operation of community services programs necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
  • Ability to assist in developing and implementing goals, objectives, practices, policies, procedures, and work standards.
  • Ability to interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials.
  • Ability to operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software programs.
  • Ability to make accurate business arithmetic and statistical computations; accurately process cash transactions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
  • Ability to use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
  • Ability to use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
  • Ability to establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of recreation and/or community services and program development, implementation, review, and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of recreational and community service, cultural, age-specific, and social needs of the community.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of program administration, including budgeting, purchasing, and basic supervision.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of basic public relations techniques.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures of record keeping, cash handling, and report preparation.
  • Knowledge of business arithmetic and statistical techniques.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications.
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of techniques for effectively dealing with individuals of various ages, various socio-economic and ethnic groups, and effectively representing the City in contacts with the public.
  • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors and City staff.

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university is desirable.
  • Ability to obtain American Red Cross First Aid Certificate, and CPR Certificate for infant, child, and adult within three (3) months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, and provides direction and oversight for a variety of recreation and community services activities, programs, and special events.
  • Provides administrative support and program assistance to the Recreation Manager.
  • Fosters cooperative working relationships with various public and private groups.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned services and programs.
  • Identifies resource needs and recommends and implements policies and procedures, including standard operating procedures for assigned programs.
  • Plans, coordinates, reviews, and evaluates one or more recreation and/or community services programs and/or activities such as Bellflower Recreation In Motion (BRIM), Park Patrol, special events, and related programming and activities.
  • Establishes schedules and methods for providing programming and services.
  • Assists in evaluating program effectiveness and recommending improvements or modifications.
  • Coordinates activities and programs with local schools, school district, adult educational programs, social service agencies, and other community organizations.
  • Conducts outreach and seeks partnerships with community organizations and residents to provide information about available programs and resources.
  • Determines eligibility of program participants including explaining program eligibility requirements and application procedures, assisting participants in completing applications, and reviewing and processing applications.
  • Completes required information and inputs into computerized records systems.
  • Plans, schedules, assigns staff, coordinates, implements, and participates in assigned recreation and community services programming and events.
  • Prepares marketing and advertising documents, brochures, forms, presentations, media news releases etc. to publicize programs and services.
  • Estimates costs of supplies and materials; orders supplies and materials for projects and activities.
  • Maintains records of purchase orders.
  • Assists in developing budget figures for assigned programs and/or facilities.
  • Monitors expenditures and revenues.
  • Maintains accurate records of assigned programs, services, and activities.
  • Prepares a variety of periodic and special reports.
  • Acts as a representative to patrons and residents regarding questions, problems, concerns, and activities in the provision of recreation and/or community services programming operations, activities, and services.
  • Participates in ensuring compliance with relevant health, safety, permitting, and licensing laws and guidelines.
  • Maintains and updates all records required by federal, state, and local regulatory agencies including ensuring compliance for insurance and liability coverage.
  • Travels to assigned program sites to monitor program activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Exercises technical and functional supervision over and provides training to lower-level staff, volunteers, and contract instructors.
