Principal Technical Program Manager

Microsoft•,
•$142,800 - $304,200

About The Position

The Principal Technical Program Manager will connect enterprise customer needs, field insights, and engineering execution across Microsoft's security portfolio. The role leads cross-functional programs to remove adoption barriers and improve product usability and deployment readiness. Using technical judgment, trusted evidence, and clear accountability, the program manager turns recurring customer friction into scalable improvements with measurable customer and business outcomes. The role owns programs from strategy and scope through delivery, establishing success measures, roadmaps, milestones, dependencies, and decision rights. It translates customer needs and technical evidence into actionable problem statements, influences product direction, drives resolution and accountability, and builds shared reporting and repeatable operating mechanisms. The program manager also applies technical and security judgment across cloud services, infrastructure, networking, identity, endpoints, data platforms, and application integrations, and leads through influence across organizational boundaries.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 6+ years of experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.
  • Ability to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • U.S. citizenship verification is required due to citizenship-based legal restrictions; verification will be via a valid passport.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated ownership of complex technical programs involving multiple engineering or operational teams, from problem definition and planning through implementation and measurable outcomes.
  • Technical fluency across enterprise systems, cloud infrastructure, software or data integration, and security dependencies, including root-cause investigation and evaluation of engineering tradeoffs.
  • Experience aligning technical and business stakeholders, resolving ambiguity, managing dependencies and risks, and delivering results without direct reporting authority.
  • Experience using operational data, analytical queries, dashboards, or telemetry to validate assumptions, prioritize work, and measure program effectiveness.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including translating technical issues into clear customer explanations, executive recommendations, and actionable engineering requirements.
  • Experience connecting enterprise customer needs with engineering roadmaps, technical onboarding, deployment readiness, and product improvement programs.
  • Experience with Azure or other enterprise cloud platforms, hybrid infrastructure, identity and access controls, endpoint environments, or security and compliance programs.
  • Experience establishing shared reporting definitions and operational frameworks using tools such as SQL, Power BI, Excel, Azure DevOps, Jira, or Confluence.
  • Experience leading modernization, platform integration, service portfolio standardization, or technical debt reduction across distributed teams or complex organizations.
  • Ability to connect technical decisions and program investments to customer value, delivery cost, adoption, and business outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Own cross-organizational programs by defining strategy, scope, success measures, roadmaps, milestones, dependencies, and decision rights, and lead delivery across engineering, field, support, and business stakeholders.
  • Translate customer needs and technical evidence into actionable problem statements and acceptance criteria, distinguishing product gaps from configuration issues, infrastructure dependencies, unclear requirements, and process failures.
  • Partner with product and engineering teams to consolidate recurring customer blockers into prioritized improvements in usability, reliability, and operational readiness.
  • Establish clear ownership, manage risks and dependencies, maintain an effective escalation path, and close the loop with documented delivery evidence and customer validation.
  • Use operational data, SQL, telemetry, and reporting tools to establish a shared source of truth and define consistent metrics and status semantics.
  • Develop repeatable intake, prioritization, engineering handoff, readiness review, and customer feedback processes, including durable playbooks, service definitions, and clear accountability.
  • Navigate technical dependencies across cloud services, infrastructure, networking, identity, endpoints, data platforms, and application integrations; partner with engineering and security specialists on risk mitigation, access controls, and secure operational practices.
  • Resolve conflicting priorities using verified evidence, customer impact, and business value; communicate recommendations to executives, facilitate decisions across organizational boundaries, and coach peers in technical program management.
