About The Position

The Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) Post-Graduate Administrative Residency role provides hands-on administrative experience and exposure to current challenges facing the healthcare industry today for graduates with a master's degree in healthcare administration or a related field. The post-graduate administrative residency allows the resident to gain exposure within a specific department in a multi-disciplinary, complex healthcare organization through project-based work and partnership with operational leadership. Through this experience, the post-graduate administrative resident will have an opportunity to collaborate with leaders and stakeholders to further develop leadership skills, participate in cross-functional learning, and build professional relationships across the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and completion of an accredited master's program in Health Care Administration or related field or must be within their final semester with degree completed within six months or hire.
  • Think independently, organize, plan and make decisions.
  • Communicate effectively, which includes verbal, nonverbal, as well as listening skills.
  • Facilitate groups and teams effectively and promote the VCU Health System’s processes, utilizing proven tools and methods.
  • Design and complete data analysis methodology accurately.
  • Consistently function as a role model and maintain positive interactions with all customers, colleagues, supervisors and team members.
  • Verbalize knowledge of local, federal and state laws and regulations as well as TJC standards related to the position’s chief objective.
  • Interpret data, standards and regulations.
  • Demonstrate aptitude for compliance with VCUHS policies, procedures and customer service philosophy.
  • Actively engage in professional activities.
  • Negotiate effectively.
  • Provide effective written documents.
  • Problem solve using critical thinking and decision making skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic initiatives in assigned area(s) and will be actively involved in the planning and execution of those initiatives.
  • Plan and execute projects for assigned area(s) while gaining exposure to managerial and strategic challenges at that level.
  • Gain exposure to business planning, operational and capital budgeting through participation in operational and financial project-based work.
  • Enhance understanding of how hospital leaders use financial data to make key decisions.
  • Collaborate with participants from various areas to complete assigned projects.
  • Spend time in various areas to gain exposure to the various functions and services provided by different departments.
  • Develop administrative and leadership skills, such as fostering team cohesion, motivation of staff, effective interpersonal communication, problem solving, customer service/service excellence, and project management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects to support the mission of VCUHS and the Department.
  • Provides assistance and support to team members to promote effective collaboration and operational continuity.
  • Accepts alternate assignments, as required.
