Post Doctoral Fellow

Amgen•Cambridge, MA
•$81,178 - $109,830

About The Position

Amgen is seeking a highly motivated Process Development Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Drug Product Technologies organization. The Fellow will lead an innovative research project focused on enabling high-concentration biologic drug products through particle engineering and suspension-based formulation and fill/finish approaches. The group develops phase-appropriate drug product formulations and fill/finish processes for large-molecule modalities, including monoclonal antibodies, bispecific T-cell engagers, antibody-drug conjugates, and fusion proteins. The role involves conducting laboratory and analytical research, developing formulations and processes, analyzing data, preparing technical documentation, and collaborating with the team. The Fellow should be adaptable, work effectively across time zones and cultures, and adjust working hours to accommodate project and collaboration needs.

Requirements

  • PhD at the time of appointment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, maintain accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies.
  • Self-motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude.
  • Critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent research skills.
  • Good organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with pharmaceutical or biotechnology process development.
  • Knowledge of drug product unit operations such as ultrafiltration/diafiltration, filling, filtration, and mixing, and experience with analytical techniques such as SEC, CEX, HIAC, and MFI.
  • Experience developing spray-dried particles or microparticles containing proteins, peptides, biologics, or other complex pharmaceutical modalities.
  • Understanding of protein physical and chemical stability and how process-related stresses affect molecule attributes and product quality.
  • Experience developing concentrated protein suspension formulations for prefilled syringe applications, including syringe compatibility testing, break-loose force, extrusion force, injectability, and dose-delivery performance.
  • Proficiency in at least one statistical software package, such as SAS, JMP, or Minitab.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB; database languages such as SQL; data analytics and modeling; and data visualization tools such as Tableau, Spotfire, or D3js.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute studies to develop high-concentration protein formulations by evaluating viscosity-reducing excipients and formulation strategies.
  • Participate in executing and documenting laboratory studies, including ultrafiltration/diafiltration, spray drying, mixing, and stability studies.
  • Evaluate product and process performance through analytical testing, including SEC, CEX-U/HPLC, particle analysis, and moisture content.
  • Use solid-state methods such as SEM, DSC, and DVS to assess relationships among formulation composition, particle structure, stability, and product performance.
  • Perform rheological characterization of high-concentration formulations and suspensions.
  • Develop and evaluate concentrated protein suspension formulations for parenteral delivery, including device compatibility assessment.
  • Build data and analytics solutions using commercial dashboarding tools such as TIBCO Spotfire and MS Smartsheet.
  • Analyze data using statistical software such as JMP or SAS.
  • Author, review, and verify technical protocols and reports.
  • Share study results and technical challenges in team meetings.
  • Adapt working hours to project needs and team collaboration.
  • Work across time zones and engage respectfully with diverse cultures.

Benefits

  • Health and welfare plans for staff and eligible dependents.
  • Financial plans with opportunities to save for retirement or other goals.
  • Work/life balance and career development opportunities.
  • Retirement and Savings Plan with company contributions.
  • Group medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Life and disability insurance.
  • Flexible spending accounts.
  • Discretionary annual bonus program, or a sales-based incentive plan for field sales representatives.
  • Stock-based long-term incentives.
  • Award-winning time-off plans.
  • Flexible work models where possible.
