About The Position

The Post Doctoral Fellow is a temporary research-trainee appointment in Emory University's School of Medicine, Department of Human Genetics. The Fellow receives advanced training and close supervision from faculty Principal Investigators while developing professional skills and research independence. The research focus is developing and applying advanced machine learning, deep learning, and AI tools to study multiple types of genomics data—including genetics (GWAS), transcriptomics, epigenetics, and proteomics—to investigate the genomics etiology of complex diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, age-related motor traits, and Parkinson disease. The Fellow will work jointly with Principal Investigators Dr. Michael Epstein and Dr. Jingjing Yang and engage in cross-disciplinary collaboration with scientists within and beyond the department. The Fellow is encouraged to apply for career-development awards as part of the training process.

The initial appointment is one year, with renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funding is available. Appointments may not exceed five years. Work is generally performed in person at an Emory University location; remote-work days may be granted at the department’s discretion, and Emory may change remote-work status with notice.

Requirements

• Doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS, etc.) in an appropriate field.
• Excellent scientific writing ability.
• Strong oral communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
• Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

Nice To Haves

• Ph.D. in Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Computer Science, Computational Biology, or a related field.
• Proficiency in one or more programming languages, such as R or Python.
• Experience working with large-scale genomics datasets and next-generation sequencing data; desired but not required.
• Experience with high-performance computing cluster environments with Linux (bash commands); desired but not required.

Responsibilities

• Design and conduct research within a specified field under the direction of a Principal Investigator.
• Design and evaluate experiments.
• Develop new ideas that advance current research.
• Develop and apply machine learning, deep learning, and AI tools to genomics data to study the etiology of complex diseases.
• Prepare and publish scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigators.
• Engage in cross-disciplinary collaborative research with scientists within and beyond the department.
• May operate specific equipment.
• May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff.
• May apply for career-development awards as part of the training process.
