About The Position

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is recruiting a Police Communications Operator. The main purpose of the Police Communications Operator (PCO) is to facilitate officer safety by monitoring police radio transmissions and utilizing all communications equipment. Personnel are required to work in a fast-paced environment, multitask, have excellent communications skills and to be a self-starter. Employees are responsible for receiving and processing telephone calls using a multi-line telephone system, utilizing Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) to record and track all law enforcement communications and movement. Operating 700 MHZ statewide multi-channel radio system and utilizing National Crime Information Center database (NCIC) to assist Law Enforcement in the field. Personnel will also be responsible for monitoring and responding to ELERTS, MDOT MTA’s multi reporting tool used to assist with providing customer service. Employees may also be assigned duties such as miscellaneous filing and other clerical and typing assignments required in conjunction with the position. This position is located in Baltimore City, Maryland.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate or a General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Typing test (35 words per minute).
  • Pass a job skill assessment.
  • Pass a two-day NCIC CN1 course.
  • Able to work 40 hours per week.
  • Able to work variable shifts, evenings, holidays, and weekends.
  • May be subject to emergency on-call 24 hours a day and may be required to maintain a reliable communication link (telephone or pager).
  • Eligible applicants may be subject to a background investigation.
  • Subject to pre-employment drug testing and substance abuse testing.
  • Possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Must test every two years and maintain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) certification.
  • Must test every two years and maintain National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification.
  • Must test every two years and maintain Maryland Electronic Telecommunication Resources System (METERS) certification.
  • Must test every two years and maintain Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) certification.
  • Adhere to all safety rules, policies, regulations, and personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Complete a Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) application (Form MJ-45).
  • Applications must be filled out completely and accurately, listing all relevant experience in detail and addressing the specific requirements.
  • All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
