Platform Engineer, Workplace Engineering

Modular•Los Altos, CA

About The Position

Modular’s Workplace Engineering team owns Security, IT, and AI Enablement—the systems and practices that help employees work productively and safely. This role anchors the IT pillar, owning systems for identity and access through Okta, onboarding and offboarding, the SaaS application portfolio, and an AI-powered help desk agent. The work is split roughly evenly between hands-on operations and building automation to prevent recurring issues. The role owns the IT roadmap for its areas, makes tooling and architecture decisions, sets standards, and helps develop the team. The position requires in-person work at Modular’s Los Altos, California office at least two days per week. New-hire onboarding takes place in person at that office. Candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area are welcome to apply. Travel two to four times per year is expected for all roles.

Requirements

  • Experience and interest in using AI-driven frameworks in IT, such as automating onboarding, offboarding, or identity lifecycle processes to make them faster and more reliable.
  • Full-stack developer background.
  • Proficiency in a modern programming language.
  • Understanding of modern distributed systems.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python, Bash, or similar.
  • Comfort working with REST APIs to connect SaaS systems.
  • Experience in IT engineering, systems engineering, or corporate IT, ideally at a fast-growing technology company.
  • Okta administration experience, including lifecycle management, SCIM provisioning, policy design, and application integrations.
  • Experience running or significantly improving a help desk or service management function.
  • Experience administering a SaaS portfolio, including licensing, renewals, and vendor management, and making data-driven decisions about what to retain, consolidate, or discontinue.
  • Sound judgment balancing security and user experience, with an ability to make the secure path the easy path.
  • Strong written communication, including documenting work and explaining technical tradeoffs to non-technical colleagues.
  • Strong identification with the company’s core cultural values.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Serval or another AI-driven service desk platform.
  • Experience with Okta Workflows or managing identity configuration as code, such as Terraform.
  • Familiarity with MDM platforms and endpoint management, sufficient to troubleshoot device-related escalations.
  • Familiarity with SOC 2 or similar compliance frameworks and producing audit evidence.
  • Experience with IT integration during a merger or acquisition.
  • Background supporting a developer-heavy engineering organization.

Responsibilities

  • Own and expand the Serval-powered help desk agent by designing workflows, growing its knowledge base and integrations, tuning escalation routing, and improving resolution and deflection rates.
  • Handle tickets the help desk agent cannot resolve, identify root causes, and turn recurring issues into automation, self-service, or documentation.
  • Own onboarding and offboarding end to end, ensuring new hires are productive on day one and departing employees are promptly and completely deprovisioned.
  • Automate the path from Okta to downstream applications.
  • Administer Okta, including SSO and SCIM provisioning, lifecycle management, group rules, authentication and device assurance policies, and access reviews in partnership with Security.
  • Help manage the SaaS application portfolio, including application administration, license management and true-ups, vendor relationships, and renewal decisions, with attention to cost, usage, and consistent access through Okta.
  • Write and maintain runbooks, documentation, and knowledge articles for IT operations and the help desk agent.
  • Partner with Security and AI Enablement so identity, endpoint, and support systems share controls rather than duplicating them.
  • Own the IT roadmap for the role’s areas, make tooling and architecture decisions, set standards, and help level up the team.
