Platform Engineer, Workplace Engineering

Modular•Los Altos, CA
•$148,000 - $270,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Modular's Workplace Engineering team owns Security, IT, and AI Enablement. This role anchors the IT pillar by owning the systems that help employees work productively from day one, including identity and access through Okta, onboarding and offboarding, the SaaS application portfolio, and an AI-powered help desk agent. The work is split roughly evenly between operating these systems and building automation to prevent recurring issues. The role includes taking escalations that the help desk agent cannot resolve, and building Serval workflows, Okta automation, and integrations. The engineer will own the IT roadmap for their areas, make tooling and architecture decisions, set standards, and help develop the team. Candidates ready to grow into this scope are encouraged to apply. Candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area may apply. The position requires in-person work at the Los Altos, California office at least two days per week; new-hire onboarding is conducted in person there. Travel for team onsites and local meetups is expected two to four times per year. The estimated US base salary range is $148,000–$270,000. Compensation depends on permissible job-related factors and may include an annual target bonus, equity, and benefits. Equity may make up a significant portion of total compensation. The role offers an opportunity to grow while working with a motivated team with high standards and a growth mindset.

  • Experience with IT integration during a merger or acquisition.
  • Background supporting a developer-heavy engineering organization.

Responsibilities

  • Own and expand the Serval-powered help desk agent by designing workflows, developing its knowledge base and integrations, tuning escalation routing, and improving resolution and deflection rates.
  • Handle escalated tickets the agent cannot resolve, identify root causes, and turn recurring issues into automation, self-service, or documentation.
  • Own onboarding and offboarding end to end, including making new hires productive on day one, promptly and completely deprovisioning departing employees, and automating the path from Okta to downstream applications.
  • Administer Okta as the identity backbone, including SSO and SCIM provisioning, lifecycle management, group rules, authentication and device assurance policies, and access reviews in partnership with Security.
  • Help manage the SaaS application portfolio, including application administration, license management and true-ups, vendor relationships, and renewal decisions, with attention to cost, usage, and consistent access through Okta.
  • Write and maintain runbooks, documentation, and knowledge articles for IT operations and the help desk agent.
