About The Position

The Physician works under general supervision at Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric Hospital, a short-term acute care facility, providing medical services to psychiatric patients. The role includes examining, evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients, and supporting their acute, urgent, emergent, and chronic medical needs. The Physician also provides consultations, clinical and administrative oversight to primary care nurse practitioners or physician assistants, and works with medical staff, pharmacists, facility leaders, and tertiary-care providers to support patient care and transitions.

The position contributes to quality assessment and improvement, peer review, continuous quality management, committees, and medical staff meetings. It requires maintaining clinical competency through required training and the ability to work with people with severe and persistent mental illness, including patients who may display unpredictable or violent behaviors.

Requirements

• Graduation from an approved school of medicine.
• Completion of an internship or one year of residency training.
• Three years of experience in medical services programs.
• Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree from an approved school of medicine.
• Must be licensed by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners.
• Ability to work closely and cooperatively with a wide range of patients and professionals.
• Ability to write thorough and comprehensive medical records documenting findings and services performed.
• Ability and dedication to work with a population with severe and persistent mental illness.
• Ability to work with repetitive unusual patient behaviors, including combative, threatening, acting-out, and unpredictably violent behavior.
• Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and may be required to lift more during emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Provide medical care for patients with acute, urgent, emergent, and ongoing or chronic medical problems.
• Perform medical consultations as requested.
• Provide clinical consultation to primary care nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants.
• Complete clinical encounter documentation and other records according to regulatory and policy standards.
• Refer patients for outside specialty consultation when necessary.
• Provide oversight for primary care and medical processes.
• Identify opportunities to improve medical care for hospital patients and collaborate with the Director of Professional Services and/or facility medical director and facility leadership on implementation.
• Assist the Director of Professional Services and/or facility medical director in assessing quality of care.
• Serve on assigned committees and participate in medical staff meetings, transition-of-care meetings, and other assigned committee meetings.
• Provide administrative and clinical supervision to primary care nurse practitioners or physician assistants.
• Consult with medical staff and pharmacists about medication and other medical issues affecting psychiatric and general medical care.
• Participate in peer review and continuous quality management programs and initiatives.
• Maintain physician privileges at tertiary hospitals to support consultation with tertiary providers and access to facility patients’ medical records in the tertiary system.
• Coordinate clinical aspects of transitioning facility patients hospitalized at a tertiary hospital back to the facility.
• Attend teleneurology and/or telemedicine consultations with the facility’s BHDD-OMH neurologist for facility patients.
• Assist with screening referred patients when necessary to determine medical appropriateness for admission.
• Maintain clinical competency by completing required mandatory and non-mandatory in-services or training, including MANDT, MAPS, CPR, Corporate Compliance, and online training.
