About The Position

The Person In Charge (PIC) provides friendly, courteous, and helpful service to Safeway customers. When the Store Manager and First and Second Assistant Managers are absent, the PIC is in charge of the store and has comparable authority to make decisions needed to support store operations, profitability, efficiency, and customer service. While in charge, generally at night, the PIC supervises store employees and may work in various store departments. The role also includes Cashier-Checker duties. The PIC handles customer service, store personnel supervision, customer and employee concerns and accidents, sales-floor service and replenishment, checkout-area stock, basic office tasks, register transactions, payments, change, and grocery bagging. Additional duties may include closing the office, counting out-of-stock products or tills, and other assigned work.

Requirements

Ability to follow company customer-service procedures.
Demonstrated prior customer-service skills or related experience.
Ability to interact with customers and co-workers.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Knowledge of all positions within the store.
Ability to work independently.

Nice To Haves

Prior experience as a clerk or manager.

Responsibilities

Provide customer service in accordance with company procedures and policy.
Handle emergencies, customer complaints, and customer or employee accidents appropriately.
Supervise all store personnel when the Store Manager and Assistant Managers are absent.
Maintain familiarity with company policies and procedures.
Monitor customer service and product replenishment on the sales floor.
Restock displays around the checkout area.
Help maintain a clean and safe store environment.
Assist cashiers with computer, register, and scanner problems.
Perform basic office functions to assist customers and personnel.
Operate an electronically scanning cash register and total customer bills.
Receive payments and provide correct change.
Bag groceries and lift bags into grocery carts; offer carry-out assistance and provide it if a Courtesy Clerk is unavailable.
May complete end-of-day office functions.
May count out-of-stock products and tills when other cashier-checkers leave.
Perform other duties as assigned.
