The Person In Charge (PIC), also identified as the Grocery Fourth Person, provides friendly, courteous, and helpful customer service. During the absence of the Store Manager and First and Second Assistant Managers, the PIC is in charge of the store and has analogous authority to make decisions needed to operate it effectively, profitably, and with superior customer service. When in charge—generally at night—the PIC supervises store employees. The role also performs Cashier-Checker duties and may require working in various store departments. The PIC handles customer and employee concerns and emergencies, oversees the sales floor and store personnel, supports checkout operations, maintains store cleanliness and safety, and performs assigned office and cash-handling duties. Physical demands include prolonged standing, frequent walking, repetitive handling and grasping, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling items of varying weights. Work is almost entirely indoors, with rare outdoor work and seldom exposure to mild cleaning chemicals.
