About The Position

The Patient Safety Technician reflects Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values; adheres to its Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program; and complies with relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards. The role helps keep patients safe through continuous observation, compassionate support, verbal redirection, de-escalation, and assistance with basic daily care. This is a part-time position at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb, working 32 hours per week across four shifts. Available shift options are 11:00 AM–7:30 PM and 3:00 PM–11:30 PM. The schedule includes alternating weekends, with availability to work both Saturdays and Sundays, and rotating holidays.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

Remain at the bedside of an assigned patient at all times unless relieved by an appropriate staff member.
Provide calming and reorienting conversation to patients who are agitated or confused.
Identify and remove hazards from the patient and the patient’s environment, and report them as appropriate.
Assist patients with activities of daily living as delegated by a supervising RN, including ambulating, toileting, bed making, and positioning.
Provide continuous safety observation, including continuous video monitoring, for patients identified as at risk of injuring themselves or others.
Offer basic comfort measures and support patients’ emotional needs through encouragement, distraction, coping strategies, cognitive stimulation activities, and de-escalation techniques within the scope of the role.
Remotely monitor multiple patients through continuous video monitoring.
Provide effective verbal redirection to designated remote-observation patients to prevent risk behaviors.
Summon appropriate staff using a communication device or STAT Alert Alarm when appropriate.
