About The Position

The Patient Safety Technician reflects Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values, adheres to its Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with applicable policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards. The position is at Kishwaukee Hospital and involves overnight work from 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM. Part-time and full-time schedules are available; the posting also lists 40 hours per week and 1.0 FTE. The technician maintains continuous safety observation of assigned patients, either at the bedside or through video monitoring. The role includes helping patients remain calm and oriented, removing hazards, providing delegated assistance with activities of daily living, and redirecting patients from risky behavior while summoning appropriate staff when needed.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

Remain at the bedside of an assigned patient at all times unless relieved by an appropriate staff member.
Provide calming and reorienting conversation when a patient is agitated or confused.
Identify and remove hazards from the patient and the patient’s environment, and report them as appropriate.
Assist patients with activities of daily living as delegated by a supervising RN, including ambulating, toileting, bed making, and positioning.
Provide continuous video safety observation for patients identified as at risk of injuring themselves or others.
Offer basic comfort measures and address patients’ emotional needs using encouragement, distraction, coping strategies, cognitive stimulation activities, and de-escalation techniques within the scope of the role.
Remotely monitor multiple patients through continuous video monitoring.
Verbally redirect designated remote-observation patients from engaging in risk behaviors.
Summon appropriate staff through a communication device or STAT Alert Alarm when appropriate.
