The Patient Safety Attendant (PSA) provides continuous observation and monitoring for high-risk patients as part of high-quality, patient-centered care. Working with the patient care team, the PSA helps maintain an environment free of obstacles and reduce the risk of falls and accidental or intentional self-harm. The role may also assist patients with basic activities of daily living. The PSA maintains direct line of sight with the patient, including during visits and while the patient is transported or receives testing and procedures away from their usual environment. The attendant assesses the room, monitors the patient's physical and emotional condition, reports changes promptly, intervenes to prevent harm, and seeks immediate assistance when incidents escalate. The role includes documenting patient status and activity, respecting patient rights and confidentiality, communicating with patients and the care team, and supporting patient- and family-centered care. The PSA may support departmental teamwork, assist with new-staff orientation, participate in performance improvement activities, and restock non-medicinal patient room supplies. Employees complete initial and ongoing training and competencies appropriate to the service line, facility, and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS) and de-escalation training are required within 30 days of employment. No travel is required.
