Operations Campus Manager

Intersect•Amarillo, TX

About The Position

As Campus Operations Manager — Meitner Energy Center on Intersect's Operations team, this role is the premier on-site asset leadership position in Pampa, Texas, with single-point accountability for the safety, performance, and long-term reliability of a flagship multi-technology generation campus powering co-located Google data center infrastructure. The campus combines approximately 500 MW of solar PV, 650 MW of wind generation, 1 GW / 2 GWh of battery energy storage, 300 MW of fast-start reciprocating gas generation, and a 345kV/34.5kV breaker-and-a-half switching station. It includes a 300 MW BESS and 300 MW gas microgrid configured for islanded operation to sustain critical data center load independently of the ERCOT grid. The manager leads Solar, Wind, BESS, Gas, and High Voltage / Substation Site Managers and internalized maintenance teams to maximize campus Equivalent Availability Factor (EAF), maintain NERC CIP and ERCOT compliance, and ensure reliable power delivery from commissioning through long-term operations. The position partners with Engineering, Technical Services, Asset Management, Origination and Trading, executive leadership, the Transmission Service Provider, and local authorities. Intersect develops, constructs, and operates power and data center infrastructure, co-locating industrial demand with dedicated gas and renewable power generation. It was acquired by Google in March 2026 and operates as an independent subsidiary. The Operations team is responsible for safe, efficient, reliable performance of utility-scale generation, storage, and high-voltage assets. The role leads the complex campus through construction handoff and into long-term operation. The position requires full-time on-site work in Pampa / Gray County, Texas, with up to 20% travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Clean Energy Management, or an equivalent technical military or field leadership background.
  • 10–12+ years of experience in utility-scale power generation operations, including at least 5+ years managing complex, multi-technology clean energy sites, hybrid power plants, or heavy industrial campuses.
  • Proven experience managing other managers and leading multidisciplinary, internalized maintenance teams in high-consequence, 24/7 operational environments.
  • Deep operational familiarity with medium-voltage (35kV) collector systems and high-voltage (345kV) substation architecture; breaker-and-a-half configuration is strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on expertise in at least two of these technologies: solar PV, wind generation, BESS, or reciprocating gas generation.
  • Hands-on knowledge of microgrid and islanded operations, including grid-forming inverter controls, black start, and seamless load transfer serving critical behind-the-meter data center or industrial load.
  • Working knowledge of ERCOT market protocols and reliability standards, NERC CIP compliance, OSHA Title 29 protocols, and local frameworks such as Chapter 312 tax abatement compliance.
  • Proficiency with SCADA/EMS platforms, SideTracker, Stampli, G Suite, Lucidchart, and generative AI tools such as Claude and Gemini to synthesize operational and financial data into executive-ready briefings.
  • Commitment to full-time on-site work in Pampa / Gray County, Texas, with up to 20% travel, and ability to lead through active construction and commissioning boundaries and Texas Panhandle weather extremes.
  • Strategic, people-first leadership grounded in safety, accountability, and operational rigor, aligned with Intersect's values of Equity, Humility, Authenticity, Long-run Value, and People Come First.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with breaker-and-a-half high-voltage substation architecture.
  • Operational experience spanning at least two of solar PV, wind generation, BESS, and reciprocating gas generation.
  • Experience managing multi-technology utility-scale generation sites and leading other managers.
  • Direct operational and switching oversight experience with 345kV or 230kV+ substations and NERC CIP / ERCOT compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead overarching operations across co-located solar PV, wind, BESS, and fast-start reciprocating gas assets, aligning technology-specific targets into a unified campus strategy.
  • Manage, mentor, and evaluate Wind, Solar, BESS, Gas, and High Voltage / Substation Site Managers; establish standardized governance, work practices, and reporting cadences.
  • Optimize campus Capex and Opex through shared logistics, collective spare parts management, cross-utilization of labor and tooling, and financial workflows in Stampli and SideTracker.
  • Oversee safe, continuous operation of the 345kV/34.5kV breaker-and-a-half switching station and 35kV collector pathways, including switching, clearances, and outage coordination across generation and behind-the-meter load.
  • Maintain readiness of the 300 MW BESS and 300 MW reciprocating gas microgrid for islanded operation, including grid-forming inverter controls, black start capability, transition and resynchronization procedures, and periodic verification testing.
  • Act as the primary on-site interface with the Transmission Service Provider, balancing authority, and ERCOT scheduling coordinators; ensure NERC CIP and ERCOT reliability-standard compliance.
  • Partner with Origination and Trading and the Operations Control Center to optimize real-time dispatch across clean energy, BESS state of charge, and fast-start gas to meet power factor, market, and behind-the-meter data center commitments.
  • Direct preventative maintenance for Texas Panhandle environmental conditions and lead root cause analysis with Technical Services.
  • Lead construction-to-operations handoff across technologies, including commissioning validation, punch list closure, staffing execution, and executive briefings using operational and data tools.
  • Enforce a zero-harm safety culture under OSHA Title 29 protocols, standardizing LOTO, high-voltage switching, arc flash procedures, and incident command across battery thermal, gas, wind rescue, and severe weather hazards.
  • Manage local regulatory and community obligations in Gray County, including Chapter 312 tax abatement compliance, wildlife mitigation plans, and county road agreements.
