About The Position

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the OHS Team Lead (Lead) is accountable for supporting the development, implementation, and administration of the Alberta Sheriffs Police Service (ASPS) OHS Program in alignment with legislative requirements and organizational priorities. The Lead works in partnership with the Human Resources (HR) Director, Employee Relations (ER) and OHS Personnel and ER/OHS Consultants ensuring the successful implementation, monitoring, and continual improvement of OHS programs across the ASPS. This role acts as a subject-matter-expert (SME), providing guidance, advice, and support to senior leadership and stakeholders regarding the interpretation and application of OHS policy and program requirements. This role provides direction, guidance and mentorship to support OHS consultants, ensuring the provision of effective and outcome-oriented advisory services to meet client needs and comply with the ASPS OHS policy, program, OHS and related legislation, standards, and industry best practices. This position will be key in the development and training of all occupational health and safety requirements for civilians, peace officers and police officers.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
  • Plus four (4) years of progressive occupational health and safety experience.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License or equivalent is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant technical competencies, such as proficiency in data analysis, incident investigation, inspections
  • Experience working in a police service, law enforcement, public safety, or other complex, high-risk operational environment.
  • Experience developing or supporting OHS programs, policies, training, inspections, investigations, audits, or data analysis tools.
  • A relevant OHS designation or certification, such as Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP), National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO), Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist (ROHT), or another applicable professional designation.
  • A related 2 year diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution and 6-years or related experience.
  • A related 1-year certificate from a recognized post-secondary and 7-years of related experience.
  • Directly related education or experience considered on 1-year of education for 1-year of experience; or 1-year of experience for 1-year of education.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the ASPS Occupational Health and Safety Program, ensuring alignment with legislation, policy, and operational needs.
  • Provide expert advice, guidance, and support to leaders, HR partners, OHS personnel, and stakeholders on complex OHS matters, policies, and program requirements.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of OHS policies, procedures, manuals, training, and communication materials for civilian employees, peace officers, and police officers.
  • Use OHS data, incident trends, inspections, audits, and program reviews to identify risks, recommend improvements, and support evidence-based reporting to senior leadership.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and mentorship to OHS consultants and team members to ensure consistent, effective, and client-focused OHS advisory services across ASPS.
