Nurse Extern- Med/Surg
About The Position
The Nurse Extern performs patient care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse (RN) in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The role includes assisting patients with personal care to support recovery, performing basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures, helping provide a safe environment and safe care, and maintaining required skills and competencies. The position is intended for currently enrolled student nurses who meet the specified program and graduation criteria. Externs may remain employed until graduation. After graduation and completion of board requirements, they must apply for open positions and continue through the hiring process.
Requirements
- Be a currently enrolled student nurse graduating between December 2025 and May 2027.
- BSN students must have completed their third year; ASN students must have completed their first year.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients with personal care as needed to support optimal recovery during hospitalization.
- Perform basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Help provide a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
- Perform administrative support functions.
- Maintain necessary skills and competencies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
