Nurse Extern II - Med Surg
About The Position
The Nurse Extern II (NE II) is a member of the patient care services team whose primary responsibilities include technical, multi-skilled direct and indirect patient care activities. The NE II works under the supervision of a registered nurse, who delegates tasks according to patient needs and the extern’s skills and abilities. The NE II reports deviations from expected patient parameters to the registered nurse. Specific patient care tasks may vary by unit or service line depending on the patient population. Each shift, the Nurse Extern II is assigned to an experienced RN and assists with patient care, including activities of daily living (ADLs), vital signs, ambulation, and other duties within the scope of a patient care technician or equivalent role. The assigned RN instructs and mentors the extern in the clinical area and provides ongoing feedback. DMC Harper University Hospital is a specialty referral hospital recognized for clinical expertise and innovative research. Its Centers of Excellence include neurosciences, bariatric surgery, vascular services, multidisciplinary cardiovascular services, hypertension, stroke prevention, and heart failure.
Requirements
- Applicants may apply starting six months before graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Must pass all senior courses to remain in the program.

- Report deviations from expected patient parameters to the registered nurse.
- Assist with activities of daily living, vital signs, ambulation, and other duties within the scope of a patient care technician or equivalent role.
- Receive instruction, mentoring, and ongoing feedback from the assigned experienced RN.
