About The Position

The Nurse Extern role provides expanded clinical experience for professional (RN) nursing students and supports Registered Nursing staff by performing patient care activities. The role participates in patient care planning, implementation, observation, and evaluation, and reports significant observations to a Registered Nurse.

The Nurse Extern II works in the Med Surg setting at Piedmont Medical Network - Fort Mill Hospital. The position includes checking and documenting blood sugar, obtaining and reporting vital signs, coordinating care with other health professionals, assisting in emergency situations, and notifying a nurse of changes in a patient's condition.

Fort Mill Hospital is a 100-bed facility opened in 2022, with advanced technology and new equipment. Its services include a 24/7 emergency department, an intensive care unit, a medical/surgical unit, and women's care including labor and delivery.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• American Heart Association BLS CPR certification, to be obtained within 7 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Accurately check patients’ blood sugar and document results as ordered; report all values to the attending nurse.
• Obtain vital signs appropriately based on the patient’s age and condition, and immediately report abnormal findings to the attending or charge nurse.
• Coordinate care with other health professionals.
• Provide appropriate treatment in emergency situations, such as codes and patient falls.
• Notify the nurse of changes in a patient’s condition.
• Perform related duties as required.
