Nurse Extern- Med/Surg
About The Position
The Nurse Extern performs patient-care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The role assists patients with personal care, performs basic nursing skills delegated by an RN and in accordance with policies and procedures, supports a safe environment and safe care delivery, performs administrative tasks, and maintains required skills and competencies. This is an eight-week program running June 14 through August 7, 2027, at Haymarket UVA Community Health. Following orientation, externs work 36–40 hours per week across three 12-hour shifts. Candidates must be flexible to work day or night shifts to match their preceptor’s schedule. The position pays $17.28 per hour, before any applicable shift differentials or other incentives.
Requirements
- Be a nursing student entering the final year of nursing school, with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028.
- BSN students must have completed their third year; ASN students must have completed their first year.
- Be flexible to work day or night shifts according to the schedule of the assigned preceptor.
