About The Position
The Nurse Extern delivers high-quality, patient-centered care by performing delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living. Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the Nurse Extern assists nursing staff in providing care consistent with the extern’s skills and training and the department’s needs. The role also helps maintain a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment. Nurse Externs are currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing and may perform higher-level procedures after competency is achieved. This position is with TriStar Centennial Medical Center, a 740+ bed comprehensive facility offering medical and surgical programs and services including behavioral health, emergency care, heart and vascular care, imaging, neurosciences, oncology, orthopedics, pediatrics, rehabilitation, sleep disorder care, and women’s services.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, obtained and maintained within the time frames required by hospital policy.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited registered nursing program.
- Eligible for Nurse Extern consideration after completing the first nursing semester, or as a CNA in the first semester of an RN program.
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
Responsibilities
- Provide appropriate care for the patient populations served in the department.
- Communicate pertinent information to appropriate individuals.
- Deliver compassionate, holistic care while supporting patients’ rights and dignity.
- Document patient care information in the appropriate computer screens.
- Assist assigned patients with activities of daily living.
- Assist nursing staff with delegated patient care under registered nurse supervision.
- Help maintain a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment.
