About The Position

Medical City Plano is seeking a Nurse Extern for its Neuro ICU. The Nurse Extern is a valued member of the nursing team who gains hands-on experience while exploring the scope of the Registered Nurse role. The position supports safe, compassionate patient care and helps the extern build skills and confidence to take on more advanced responsibilities while progressing through a nursing program.

The extern provides basic patient care, assists with nursing tasks as competency develops, documents and communicates care, supports patients and families, and helps maintain a clean and safe patient environment. The role also includes participating in learning opportunities and working with a supervisor or preceptor on a personal career development plan.

Requirements

• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
• Enrollment in an accredited nursing (BSN) program.
• Completion of Foundation, Fundamental, or Med Surg I clinical.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility, comfort, and hygiene.
• Perform nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, specimen collection, and other basic procedures as experience and competency develop.
• Document care accurately and provide timely updates to the nursing team.
• Help patients and families understand care plans and provide guidance related to health and recovery.
• Maintain clean, safe, and organized patient areas by following infection prevention practices and managing equipment.
• Participate in learning opportunities, share ideas to improve care, and partner with a supervisor or preceptor to develop a personal career plan.
