About The Position

The Nurse Extern delivers high-quality, patient-centered care by performing delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living. Under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), the Nurse Extern assists nursing staff in providing patient care in accordance with the extern’s skills and training and department needs. The role also supports a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment. Nurse Externs are currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing and may perform higher-level procedures after achieving competency.

The position serves patient populations in the assigned department and includes communicating pertinent information, documenting care in appropriate computer screens, providing compassionate and holistic care, supporting patients’ rights and dignity, and assisting assigned patients with activities of daily living.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, obtained and maintained within time frames required by hospital policy.
• Currently enrolled in good standing in an accredited RN nursing program.
• Eligible for consideration after completing the first nursing semester, or as a CNA in the first semester of an RN program.
• Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.

Responsibilities

• Provide appropriate care for the patient populations served in the assigned department.
• Communicate pertinent information to appropriate individuals.
• Deliver compassionate, holistic care while supporting the rights and dignity of patients.
• Document patient care information in the appropriate computer screens.
• Assist assigned patients with activities of daily living.
• Assist nursing staff with patient care under the supervision of an RN, within the Nurse Extern’s skills and training.
• Help maintain a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment.
