About The Position

The Nurse Extern delivers high-quality, patient-centered care by performing delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living. Under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), the Nurse Extern assists nursing staff with patient care in accordance with their skills and training and departmental needs. The role also supports a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment. Nurse Externs are currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing and may perform higher-level procedures after achieving competency.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, obtained and maintained within the time frames required by hospital policy.
• Currently enrolled in an accredited RN nursing program and in good standing.
• Eligible for consideration after completing the first nursing semester, or as a CNA in the first semester of an RN program.
• Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.

Responsibilities

• Provide appropriate care for the patient populations served in the department, using the required knowledge and skills.
• Communicate pertinent information to appropriate individuals.
• Deliver compassionate, holistic care while supporting patients’ rights and dignity.
• Document patient care information in the appropriate computer screens.
• Assist assigned patients with activities of daily living.
• Assist nursing staff with patient care under RN supervision and within the Nurse Extern’s skills and training.
• Help maintain a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment.
