About The Position
The Nurse Extern is a valued member of the nursing team who gains hands-on experience while exploring the scope of the Registered Nurse role. The position supports safe, compassionate patient care while building the skills and confidence needed to take on more advanced responsibilities during the nursing program. The role is with the Emergency Department at Medical City Lewisville and is PRN. The Nurse Extern assists patients with activities of daily living, vital signs, mobility, comfort, and hygiene; performs basic nursing tasks as competency develops; documents care and communicates updates to the nursing team; helps patients and families understand care plans; and maintains clean, safe patient areas. The extern also participates in learning opportunities and works with a supervisor or preceptor on a career development plan.
Requirements
- Must be enrolled in an accredited ADN or BSN nursing program.
- Must have completed foundation, fundamentals, or Med Surg I clinical.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
Responsibilities
- Help patients with activities of daily living, check vital signs, support mobility, and ensure comfort and hygiene.
- Perform nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, specimen collection, and other basic procedures as experience and competency develop.
- Document care accurately and communicate timely updates to the nursing team.
- Help patients and families understand care plans and offer guidance for health and recovery.
- Maintain clean and safe patient areas by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and keeping the environment organized.
- Participate in learning opportunities, share ideas to improve care, and work with a supervisor or preceptor to develop a personal career development plan.
