Boston Medical Center's New Graduate Nurse Residency Program supports newly licensed nurses in their transition to practice and is designed to strengthen critical thinking and clinical decision-making, improve nurse satisfaction, and contribute to patient outcomes. The program incorporates the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies and hires new graduate nurses in cohorts. Following four months of training, nurses assume a position on a Step Down unit. The Surgical Step Down (IMCU) residency cohort is scheduled for nights and is anticipated to start in March 2027. The role is for nurses who graduated from nursing school within the 12 months before their hire date. The registered nurse provides and coordinates care for patients and families across the health care continuum, including nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation. The RN is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient-care outcomes, using the nursing department's model of care and following established policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice. The position reports to the Unit Nurse Director. Candidates must apply only to the Step Down New Grad program; applicants who also apply to experienced-nurse RN positions will not be considered. Applicants should submit an online application with a resume and letter of intent attached together as one PDF. The posting states that a two-year commitment is requested of Step Down units after investing in a new graduate RN. It also states that new graduate nurses in non-critical-care practice areas are expected to remain in their roles for at least one year after completing orientation.
