Boston Medical Center’s New Graduate Nurse Residency Program supports newly licensed nurses as they transition into practice. The program incorporates the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies and hires new graduate nurses in cohorts. After four months of training, registered nurses assume positions on a Step Down unit. The Surgical Step Down (IMCU) role is for nurses who graduated from nursing school within the 12 months before their hire date. The RN provides and coordinates care for patients and families across the health care continuum, including nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation. The RN is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes, following the nursing department’s model of care and established policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice. The position reports to the Unit Nurse Director. The program is scheduled for a March 2027 start. The unit requests a two-year commitment after investing in the new graduate RN.
