About The Position

Inova Neurology Clinic at ICPH in Fairfax is seeking a dedicated Medical Assistant 1 for a part-time, weekday day-shift role. The Medical Assistant supports patient care, clinic operations, and patient flow by assisting patients and clinicians, preparing for visits, maintaining records and exam areas, and contributing to safety and quality improvement. The role includes both clinical and clerical tasks and may include additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Previous experience in a medical group practice or similar setting.
• Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Check schedules and organize patient flow.
• Record patients’ blood pressure, height, and weight; escort patients to exam or procedure rooms; and assist with walking, specimen collection, phlebotomy, injections, and other patient needs.
• Assist physicians and nurses, prepare patients for examinations and treatment, relay instructions to patients and families, answer calls, and provide pertinent information.
• Perform pre-visit planning as indicated by the physician for vulnerable patients.
• Send and receive medical records; obtain lab and imaging reports, hospital notes, and referral information; and complete forms and requisitions as needed.
• Organize medical records and scan information into patient charts so providers have necessary information for encounters.
• Instruct patients in basic testing requirements, such as clean-catch urine collection, EKGs, phlebotomy, and Pap tests.
• Set up instruments and equipment, clean rooms and equipment between visits, order and store supplies, and restock rooms.
• Dispose of expired medications and supplies and follow sterile techniques and universal precautions.
• Follow manufacturer requirements and clinic guidelines for point-of-care testing, EKGs, and phlebotomy; check equipment daily and ensure it is in working order.
• Check the clinic environment before the workday for hazards and ensure hallways and rooms are clean and free of debris.
• Identify actual and potential patient-safety risks and report safety issues promptly to the physician and practice manager.
• Provide patients with information to help them use and benefit from clinic services.
• Assist with data collection for quality-improvement activities and actively participate in quality-improvement initiatives.
• Communicate patient- or staff-related problems objectively and promptly to the practice manager.
• Participate in clinic huddles and offer suggestions to improve patient needs and clinic flow.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
