About The Position

Join our team at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Shadyside, where compassionate care and teamwork come together across every floor of our facility. We are seeking patient-focused Medical Assistants and Patient Services Coordinators to support operations throughout the center, working alongside clinical and administrative teams to ensure a seamless experience for our patients. In this role, you will provide a blend of clinical and front-end support, assisting with rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, preparing exam rooms, and supporting providers as needed. You will also play a key role in the patient experience by greeting and checking in patients, coordinating schedules, answering questions, and maintaining accurate documentation within the electronic medical record. The ideal candidate is adaptable, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is comfortable floating between teams and specialties. Our Medical Assistants and Patient Service Coordinators work Monday through Friday daylight hours - no evenings, weekends, or holidays are required! We are looking for candidates who bring strong communication skills, a commitment to service excellence, and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Prior experience as a Medical Assistant or in a healthcare setting is preferred, along with a willingness to learn and grow within oncology care. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Patient care experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT) OR successful completion of certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA) OR at least 1 year of patient care experience.
  • Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in three practice category-specific tasks as determined by the manager.
  • Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.
  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of three years of direct patient care and or phlebotomy experience.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with individuals from multi-disciplinary groups.
  • Possesses excellent organizational skills.
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience as a Medical Assistant or in a healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy licensure preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Check schedules and organize patient flow.
  • Accompany patients to the exam/procedure room.
  • Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exams, etc.
  • Collect patient information/history; take vitals, perform screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Relay instructions to patients/families.
  • Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with Health Insurance. Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other state and federal regulations.
  • Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
  • Clean according to the scheduled maintenance program and keep appropriate records.
  • Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms.
  • Comply with the requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e. OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health).
  • Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data.
  • Comply with all UPMC Health System policies and procedures.
  • Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs.
  • Perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure.
  • Assist physicians with procedures.
  • Document patient information in the medical record.
  • Answering calls and providing pertinent information including patient education as directed.
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
  • Complete forms/requisitions as needed.
  • Schedule appointments.
  • Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
  • Other front office responsibilities, as required.
  • Under the direction and supervision of a physician, administer injectable medication and vaccines when appropriate.
