About The Position

The Mechanic (DPS) position involves repairing and maintaining buses, cars, vans, and other district vehicles to ensure the educational process is not disrupted. This role requires diagnosing and repairing various automotive systems, performing regular maintenance, responding to emergency breakdowns, and conducting safety inspections. The position also includes keeping detailed records and maintaining a safe work environment.

Requirements

  • 3 years of experience in vehicle maintenance work
  • Thorough knowledge of diesel and gas engine management systems
  • Thorough knowledge of anti-lock brakes systems
  • Thorough knowledge of emission control systems
  • Thorough knowledge of engine diagnostic equipment
  • Possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter
  • Must be able to obtain an Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with school passenger endorsements within 6 months of appointment
  • Must provide own hand tools
  • Must be able to successfully pass an Ohio Department of Education T8 physical
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds
  • Must be physically able to climb, stand, lift and bend for extended periods of time
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the United States, at time of application
  • Must be able to pass the Federal and State Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation report

Nice To Haves

  • Military service (applicants who have had military service will receive an additional credit of 20% if a passing grade is attained)
  • Current employment with Dayton Public Schools (for promotional credit)

  • Diagnosing both simple and complex automotive problems
  • Repairing electrical and fuel systems
  • Rebuilding engines and braking systems
  • Inspecting and replacing drive train components
  • Performing regular maintenance according to preventative schedules
  • Responding to emergency breakdowns
  • Conducting safety inspections
  • Following instructions from supervisors
  • Keeping detailed records of work performed
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work environment
  • Performing other related tasks as needed
