DePuy Synthes Sports Medicine is recruiting for an Upstream Marketing Manager to be located in West Chester, PA or Raynham, MA. Our teams build solutions for joint reconstruction; trauma and craniomaxillofacial; sports, extremities, and elective foot and ankle; spine, robotics and digital surgery. On October 14, 2025, Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals. It is anticipated following conclusion of the transaction, you would be an employee of DePuy Synthes, and your employment would be governed by Orthopaedics employment processes, programs, policies, and benefit plans. Details of any planned changes would be provided to you by Orthopaedics at an appropriate time and subject to any necessary consultation processes. The Upstream Marketing Manager, Early Intervention (EI) shapes the front end of innovation for the EI portfolio, driving market insight, pipeline development, and commercial diligence across internal programs and external opportunities. The role partners closely with marketing, R&D, senior leadership, sales, and Business Development to ensure early-stage assets reflect strong commercial fundamentals and long-term strategic fit. This position bridges start‑up agility with enterprise rigor to support EI growth through disciplined market assessment and portfolio shaping.

Requirements

  • 5–10 years in MedTech, Pharma, Biotech, or adjacent categories (orthopedics, MSK, EI, pain, rheumatology).
  • Experience in upstream marketing, strategy, or business development.
  • Start‑up experience welcome (venture‑backed, biotech, or internal incubation).
  • New product launch experience greatly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; MBA strongly preferred.
  • VOC design, competitive intelligence, forecasting, and commercial modeling.
  • Strong cross‑functional collaboration and comfort with risk‑adjusted valuation.
  • Exposure to commercial diligence, asset screening, and deal evaluation.
  • Structured thinker with strong communication skills.
  • Commercially curious; understands adoption and access drivers early.
  • Low‑ego, high‑impact; comfortable executing details and thinking strategically.
  • High learning agility with a portfolio‑level perspective.

Responsibilities

  • Lead VOC with physicians, sales leaders, & payers to define unmet needs and inform Target Product Profiles (TPPs).
  • Translate insights into early value hypotheses and support KOL engagement with Medical Affairs.
  • Support portfolio strategy and prioritization, including early market models and lifecycle assessments.
  • Prepare materials for portfolio and governance reviews.
  • Ensure commercial perspective informs development pathways through TPP refinement, competitive frameworks, and milestone tracking.
  • Conduct market sizing and forecasting.
  • Monitor the landscape across injectables, MSK biologics, and emerging EI alternatives.
  • Develop scenario analyses highlighting risks and whitespace opportunities.
  • Support commercial diligence for licensing, acquisitions, and partnership assessments.
  • Contribute to risk assessments, synergy evaluations, and investment narratives.
  • Assess external assets for strategic fit.
  • Develop early positioning and strategic intent to ensure smooth handoff to downstream marketing.
