About The Position

ICF is seeking a North American natural gas markets subject matter expert and manager for its North American Natural Gas Markets team within the Energy Digital Infrastructure and Investment Line of Business. The role combines hands-on natural gas market consulting and modeling with client-facing advice for public- and private-sector clients. The Manager will contribute to ICF’s quarterly North American Natural Gas Base Case and consulting engagements using ICF’s proprietary Gas Market Model (GMM), which is similar to the Gas Pipeline Competition Model (GPCM). Prior GPCM experience is preferred, and the successful candidate is expected to bring strong regional market experience and learn GMM quickly. This is a balanced technical and client-facing role. The Manager independently leads projects or major workstreams, guides analysts, communicates findings to clients, and collaborates with colleagues across natural gas, power, economics, utilities, and investment advisory services. The position is preferably based in or around Reston, Virginia, but remote candidates are also considered.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, engineering, energy, statistics, mathematics, data science, public policy, finance, or a related quantitative field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in North American natural gas fundamentals and market analysis, energy consulting, market research, a utility or pipeline/midstream company, an upstream company, trading or commercial analytics, government, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience using a natural gas market model or comparable quantitative market-forecasting framework to evaluate supply, demand, transportation, storage, prices, basis, or infrastructure scenarios.
  • Experience managing analytical projects or substantial workstreams, including defining tasks, coordinating contributors, monitoring budgets and schedules, reviewing work, and delivering client-ready outputs.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and demonstrated ability to work with large, complex datasets.
  • Proficiency in AI tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical methods and results to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, and ability to work independently in a collaborative consulting environment.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in a relevant quantitative, energy, economics, engineering, policy, or business discipline.
  • Experience with nodal or network-based natural gas market modeling such as GPCM, supply-demand equilibrium modeling, production economics, pipeline flow and capacity analysis, or basis forecasting.
  • Experience calibrating models to historical data, conducting backcasts, validating outputs, documenting assumptions, and implementing repeatable model QA/QC processes.
  • Experience with pipeline expansion and market-need studies; utility gas supply and integrated resource planning; storage valuation or optimization; midstream asset valuation; LNG market analysis; power-gas coordination; regulatory proceedings; or large-load/data-center gas supply assessments.
  • Working knowledge of Python, R, SQL, VBA, statistical software, databases, data visualization, automated analytical workflows, Claude, and other AI tools.
  • Experience supporting proposals, client development, presentations, publications, or other market-facing activities.
  • Ability to learn a proprietary modeling platform quickly and become proficient in running, maintaining, troubleshooting, interpreting, and quality-checking GMM.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a regional natural gas market expert and hands-on modeler, developing assumptions and scenarios and translating model results into insights on prices, basis, supply, demand, pipeline flows, capacity utilization, storage, and infrastructure needs.
  • Learn and apply ICF’s proprietary GMM to run, maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, document, and quality-check North American natural gas market forecasts; contribute to model and workflow improvements.
  • Lead a group of analysts who run and maintain GMM.
  • Support production of ICF’s quarterly North American Natural Gas Base Case and related subscription products.
  • Analyze North American natural gas fundamentals across production basins and demand sectors, including residential and commercial load, industrial demand, power generation, LNG exports, pipeline exports, and storage activity.
  • Evaluate pipeline and storage infrastructure, transportation constraints, regional basis formation, project timing, market need, utilization, reliability, and the effects of expansions or other market changes.
  • Lead or manage consulting workstreams involving market outlooks, scenario and risk analysis, pipeline and storage assessments, gas utility planning and supply portfolios, asset valuation and due diligence, regulatory and policy analysis, LNG, and gas-to-power or large-load development.
  • Design analytical approaches, manage schedules and budgets for assigned work, coordinate contributors, identify risks early, and deliver accurate reports, presentations, and quantitative models.
  • Present methods, results, uncertainties, and strategic implications clearly to clients and internal stakeholders, and respond to technical questions with sound market judgment.
  • Mentor analysts and consultants through structured review, coaching, and knowledge transfer while remaining directly engaged in technical work.
  • Collaborate across ICF to integrate natural gas analysis with power-market modeling, infrastructure advisory, economics, regulatory, and related capabilities.
  • Contribute to proposals, scopes of work, client discussions, and thought leadership by helping shape technically sound approaches and communicating ICF’s capabilities.
