The LPN provides direct nursing care to residents and supervises day-to-day nursing activities performed by nursing assistants, LPNs, and nursing support staff. The role operates under applicable federal, state, and local standards and facility policies to maintain quality care. As charge nurse, the LPN carries delegated administrative authority and follows written protocols approved by an RN, directing nursing care and support personnel under an RN’s general supervision. The position includes administrative and personnel oversight, resident-care planning and assessments, medication administration, clinical documentation, coordination with physicians and other departments, and protection of resident rights. The LPN may work in office areas and throughout nursing-service areas, including drug rooms, nurses’ stations, and resident rooms. Work may involve interruptions, emotionally upset or hostile individuals, exposure to infectious materials and hazardous chemicals, work beyond normal hours, temporary coverage in other positions, and emergency call-back. Continuing education is expected.
