About The Position

Ontario Tech University is seeking qualified individuals for an Academic Associate position within the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities. This limited-term role, lasting one year with the possibility of renewal, focuses on Engineering Communications and Impacts of Technology. The position involves teaching courses such as SSCI 1050U/ENGR 1050U and ENGR 5201G – Communications and Ethics within FEAS. Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant field including but not limited to Engineering Communication, Technical Writing, Communication, English, Organizational Communication, Education, or cognate disciplines.
  • Extensive teaching experience and/or equivalent professional community teaching experience.
  • Experience managing teaching assistants and/or peer mentors.
  • Experience developing pedagogical materials for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills for both in-person and online classrooms.
  • Outstanding English language skills.
  • Ability to ensure strong, timely, two-way communications on an ongoing basis that contribute to collaborative/collegial relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the community at large.
  • Ability to provide an established record of excellence in teaching at the university level, as demonstrated through a fulsome teaching dossier of syllabi, assignments, and personal reflections.
  • Ability to submit a covering letter, up-to-date curriculum vitae, a teaching dossier (including a statement of teaching philosophy, strategies for teaching a diverse student body in a predominantly online learning environment, and examples of relevant syllabi and assignments), and the names of three referees.

Nice To Haves

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), or eligibility for registration in Ontario or another Canadian province.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver SSCI 1050U/ENGR 1050U - consolidated from COMM 1050U and SSCI 1470U.
  • Deliver ENGR 5201G – Communications and Ethics within FEAS.
  • Manage teaching assistants and/or peer mentors.
  • Develop pedagogical materials for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Facilitate and present effectively in both in-person and online classrooms.
  • Ensure strong, timely, two-way communications contributing to collaborative relationships.
  • Present course syllabus for ENGR 1050U Engineering Communications and Technology Impacts, including a major assignment, learning outcomes, assessment process, and guidance for evaluating student work.
  • Outline vision for the course’s core themes, learning objectives, AI policy, and evaluation structure.
