About The Position

The Life Engagement Director provides leadership and resources while actively serving residents through the social, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and physical dimensions of life, as well as dignified personal care. Reporting to the Executive Director, the director maintains regular contact with residents through individual and group activities. This is a full-time position that may require weekends, holidays, and/or evenings. The director establishes and leads a therapeutic recreation program with a balanced range of activities tailored to residents’ histories, preferences, abilities, and needs. The role oversees the engagement team, documents resident participation, maintains supplies, coordinates outside programs and volunteers, and plans special events and intergenerational opportunities. The director also supports residents with meals and daily activities, assists with resident outings and transfers as needed, communicates health changes to the team, and may assist with tours or inquiries when other staff are unavailable.

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age or a high school graduate.
Current and valid state driver’s license.
Able to speak and hear well enough to interact verbally with residents, families, staff, and visitors.
Able to see well enough to read and write English, use a computer, and visually interact with residents, families, staff, and visitors.
Able to exert 20–50 pounds of force occasionally, 10–25 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
Demonstrate a loving and empathetic approach to residents and co-workers.
Clear, timely documentation and effective written and verbal communication skills.
Customer service skills and ability to physically lead activities.
Knowledge of safety, risk management, and emergency procedures.
Openness to change, forward thinking, and flexibility.
Coachable, with problem-solving ability and a team-oriented approach.
Time-management and organizational skills; ability to take initiative and self-manage.

Responsibilities

Establish and lead a functional recreation program using a therapeutic approach, with activities addressing residents’ social, emotional, spiritual, physical, and intellectual needs.
Provide opportunities for one-on-one, small-group, and large-group activities during scheduled shifts.
Review each resident’s medical and social history and update preferences, likes, and dislikes to determine suitable activities.
Tailor activities to residents’ individual requirements and skills, and monitor resident responses and safety.
Oversee development of the community engagement team, including engagement assistants and/or an engagement coordinator.
Document resident engagement and activity participation daily and in a timely manner.
Maintain and organize the inventory of activity supplies.
Coordinate with outside groups and organizations to arrange resident programs.
Recruit, train, supervise, and assist volunteers, therapeutic recreation interns, and students.
Incorporate intergenerational opportunities into community programming.
Attend corporate compliance training, follow policies and procedures, and participate in monthly staff trainings and bi-monthly conference calls.
Communicate potential health concerns and changes in residents’ physical or mental condition to the team.
Assist with marketing responsibilities, such as taking inquiries and giving tours, when management, marketing, or team leaders are unavailable.
Create and update the monthly activity calendar and engagement spotlight board, including calendars, newsletters, entertainment announcements, and birthdays.
Assist residents with meals, snacks, and drinks throughout the day.
Assist residents with self-care and occupational activities of daily living as needed.
Assist with transferring and lifting residents as needed.
Research and present new activity ideas and participate in resident outings.
Plan special events, including resident birthdays and community parties; provide at least four family-invited events per year and coordinate dates and times with community managers.
Communicate with residents, families, staff, and visitors verbally, and read and write English and use a computer.
