About The Position

The Department of Sociology and Criminology & Justice Studies at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time lecturer for Fall 2026 to teach SOC 315: Gender in Society. This course offers a consideration of the development of gender identity and gender socialization in a social context. It examines how notions of femininity and masculinity are shaped within various social institutions such as family, work, media, and education, and how these social definitions change across the life course. The course emphasizes how gender relations vary across communities based on race and ethnicity, sexuality, age, socioeconomic class, and nationality.

Requirements

  • A master's degree in the area of instruction or a closely related field.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the State of California.
  • Must disclose whether they have received a final administrative decision or final judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last 7 years (this disclosure is required only after meeting minimum qualifications and before an offer of employment).

Nice To Haves

  • A doctorate or terminal degree in the area of instruction or a closely related field.
  • Higher education experience teaching Sociology and/or Criminology & Justice Studies.
  • Demonstrated intercultural competence.
  • Commitment to serving the campus community in teaching and, as applicable, service.

Responsibilities

  • Teach SOC 315: Gender in Society during the Fall 2026 semester.
  • Deliver instruction on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. in person.
  • Engage with students regarding the development of gender identity and socialization.
  • Discuss how gender is shaped by social institutions like family, work, media, and education.
  • Analyze how gender definitions change across the life course.
  • Explore variations in gender relations across different communities based on race, ethnicity, sexuality, age, socioeconomic class, and nationality.
