About The Position

ASU EdPlus is seeking a senior individual contributor to join its Digital Learning team and bring user-experience design practices to online learning. The designer owns visual and information design across the course portfolio, including typography, hierarchy, color, layout, page architecture, navigation, and wayfinding. The role combines student research, prototyping, usability testing, and the development of pattern libraries that enable consistent course design at scale. The Learning Experience Designer works in a collaborative, cross-functional studio alongside data scientists, UX researchers, product managers, learning assessment leads, multimedia producers, and faculty. The position is based at the SkySong ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center and is hybrid, with reliable commuting to Scottsdale required. Flexible work options may be available subject to ASU policy and approval.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment or field, or an equivalent combination of experience and/or training demonstrating comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Ability to reliably commute to Scottsdale, Arizona, for this in-person, hybrid position.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States; ASU EdPlus will not sponsor this position.
  • Application must include a cover letter and resume or CV.
  • Resume should show employment dates in month/year format, job titles, duties, and employer names.
  • Cover letter must answer questions about an interface or information architecture that measurably improved usability and a design changed based on user research rather than stakeholder opinions.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce wireframes and low- and high-fidelity mockups using tools such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Experience conducting user research, including moderated usability testing, interviews, or surveys, and iterating designs based on findings.
  • Experience building and governing a design system or pattern library used by multiple designers.
  • Practical application of WCAG 2.1 AA and Universal Design for Learning in production work, plus working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  • Fluency in learning science, including cognitive load theory, multimedia learning principles, and backward design.
  • One or two examples of visual and information design work, such as an online portfolio, PDF, or annotated screenshots, may be requested.

Responsibilities

  • Own visual and information design standards across EDL's course portfolio, including typography, hierarchy, color, iconography, spacing, and layout systems.
  • Design module-, page-, and course-level information architecture so navigation, wayfinding, sequence, and progress are clear to students.
  • Produce wireframes, mockups, and prototypes for course interfaces; iterate based on usability findings and efficacy evidence; and deliver build specifications.
  • Partner with multimedia teams to create a visual through-line between produced video and on-page design, using WCAG 2.1 AA as a design constraint.
  • Define, prototype, and validate signature experience patterns for priority moments, including their sequence, cues, and early checkpoints.
  • Develop repeatable experience patterns that transfer lessons from individual courses across the course portfolio.
  • Define success measures for patterns before launch, measure outcomes with UX Research and Action Lab, and recommend when to shift effort to another target.
  • Build and govern component, pattern, and template libraries for consistent, high-quality course design at portfolio scale.
  • Establish and facilitate recurring design critiques focused on improving work in progress.
  • Partner with UX Research on usability, first-click, and navigation testing and student interviews; analyze learner feedback and course analytics to identify where students stall or disengage.
  • Perform or coordinate other duties and projects as assigned or directed.
