League Manager (Chicago, IL)

Brodie Rec League•Chicago, IL
•$60,000 - $80,000•Onsite

About The Position

The League Manager runs a Brodie location end to end, owning the athlete experience, game-night operations, staff, season administration, and the location’s retention and growth. On game nights, the manager oversees captains, players, spectators, drop-in players, and the crew, ensuring games start on time and meet the Brodie Standard. The manager leads and develops a Game Day Lead (GDL), who runs the floor, and is accountable for performance and discipline decisions. In new or smaller markets, the manager partners with a City Launcher to grow the league. During the rest of the week, the League Manager handles scheduling, payroll, league health, captain communication, and outreach. The manager builds and operates each season, maintains accurate records and settled balances, and works independently while keeping the District Manager informed through the CRM, Season Success Checklist, and weekly check-ins. The role is based on site at assigned Brodie venue(s) and requires availability for every game night, generally 6 p.m. to midnight including weekends, as well as roughly 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on non-game weekdays.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience leading people, including hiring, scheduling, correcting, and developing a team of at least 3 in restaurants, hospitality, retail, fitness, events, or sports operations.
  • Experience holding others to a standard and describing team outcomes, not only individual contributions.
  • Proven ownership of a recurring operation, shift, location, program, or season supported by systems; demonstrated accountability for problems and making changes to prevent recurrence.
  • Experience reviewing and impacting a Profit and Loss statement.
  • Warmth and presence to make athletes feel welcomed and remembered.
  • A genuine relationship with basketball and the local community, through playing, coaching, refereeing, organizing, or captaining.
  • Full-time commitment as the candidate’s only job; availability for every game night at the location, roughly 6 p.m. to midnight including weekends, and work and reachability roughly 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on non-game weekdays.
  • On game nights, work the league rather than play in it.
  • Live in or near the assigned market and work on site at assigned Brodie venues every game night.
  • Reliable transportation to move brand fixtures and equipment.
  • Attend training and check-ins with the District Manager and HQ team as required.
  • Comfort with sales and follow-up, including converting verbal interest into paid registration and logging activity.
  • Ability to quickly adopt PlayerOne, Rippling, Slack, and other new tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing a supervisor or shift lead into a leader.
  • Having played in a Brodie league or knowing it well as an athlete.
  • A network in the local basketball or recreational sports scene.
  • Experience with CRM, payroll, timesheet, or scheduling tools.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule, hire, brief, coach, and develop the Game Day Lead and game-night staff, typically a crew of 5–20 people depending on the venue.
  • Set crew standards, make performance and discipline decisions, and involve the Game Day Lead in those decisions as a development opportunity.
  • Run game nights to the Brodie Standard, including leading the pre-game Launch Meeting, making forfeit decisions when on site, resolving escalated disputes, and submitting reports within four hours of the final game.
  • Ensure the Game Day Lead sets up the gym, keeps every court streaming, and runs the floor to the required standard.
  • Own the athlete experience by welcoming captains, engaging with players and spectators, promoting team participation, and checking in and introducing every drop-in player.
  • Manage drop-ins, open runs, and events at the location, including the players, experience, and conversion of participants into teams.
  • Respond to player and captain messages within 24 hours and follow up on complaints within 48 hours.
  • Meet retention and growth targets by re-signing teams, converting drop-in players and spectators, driving referrals and ambassador teams, and managing ambassadors.
  • Personally contact captains, lapsed teams, and the manager’s network, and record every outreach touch in the CRM.
  • Partner with the City Launcher on bringing in and retaining teams in new or smaller markets.
  • Schedule regular seasons, playoffs, and all-star events in PlayerOne; place and balance divisions; onboard captains; roster free agents; and manage jerseys, equipment, and court bookings.
  • Review and approve staff timesheets and payroll in Rippling accurately and on time; maintain accurate stats and standings; and ensure overdue balances are settled before athletes play.
  • Work independently on non-game days, keep work visible to the District Manager through the CRM, Season Success Checklist, and weekly check-ins, and raise problems early with a plan.
  • Partner with the District Manager to hire, train, and develop the crew and Game Day Lead; build checklists and handoffs so the location can operate to standard when the manager is absent; and seek additional capacity when the location sells out.

Benefits

  • Bonus of up to $5,000 per season and uncapped commission.
  • Professional development budget.
  • Paid time off: 3 weeks plus a holiday shutdown.
  • Paid sick leave.
  • Free participation in Brodie League.
  • Growth and mentorship opportunities.
