Lead, Structural (Stress) Engineer

L3Harris•Plano, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a Lead Structural (Stress) Engineer to join its Aeronautical Systems Engineering team. The role analyzes aircraft structures using classical methods and finite element analysis, including developing free body diagrams, calculating internal loads and stresses, and documenting static-strength margins of safety. The engineer leads and mentors a small team, manages team budget and schedule performance, contributes engineering estimates for bids, and provides monthly labor forecasts. The position is on-site in Greenville, Rockwall, or Plano, Texas. The work schedule is 9/80: employees work nine days in each 14-day period for a total of 80 hours and have every other Friday off. Some travel is expected (5%).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and nine years of commercial fixed-wing transport-category airplane fuselage structural-analysis experience; or a graduate degree and seven years of that experience; or, in lieu of a degree, at least thirteen years of that experience.
  • Ability to analyze the static strength of aircraft structures using classical methods and publicly available data.
  • Advanced knowledge of finite element analysis using Femap and MSC Nastran for FAA projects.
  • Familiarity with FAA and military airworthiness requirements for static strength.
  • Willingness and ability to travel; travel is listed as 5%.
  • Excellent computer skills, including working knowledge of the MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Experience with NX and Teamcenter.
  • Skill in automating calculations using VBA in Excel or another programming language.
  • Experience in engineering leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Use classical hand analysis and create finite element models to predict internal loads, displacements, and stresses for complex structures.
  • Collaborate with design engineers on aircraft modifications and installations, ensuring designs meet airworthiness requirements.
  • Generate free body diagrams and calculate internal loads and stresses.
  • Develop structural tests and post-process results to establish allowable strength data.
  • Document structural analyses in formal reports demonstrating compliance with airworthiness requirements.
  • Manage assigned work within scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Mentor and lead other engineers performing structural analysis.
  • Estimate engineering labor hours for formal bids and manage labor forecasts for a small engineering team.
  • Review engineering design data using CAD and PLM software.
  • Travel to and from flight lines and work in aircraft hangar environments; some positions require boarding and exiting aircraft.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
