Lead, Structural (Stress) Engineer

L3Harris Technologies•Greenville, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a Stress Engineer to join its Aeronautical Systems Engineering team. The role analyzes aircraft structures using classical and finite element methods to develop free-body diagrams, calculate internal loads and stresses, and document static-strength margins of safety. The successful candidate will lead and mentor a small team of stress engineers, manage team budget and schedule performance, support engineering estimates for bids, and provide monthly labor forecasts. The position is on-site in Greenville, Rockwall, or Plano, Texas, and follows a 9/80 schedule: employees work nine days out of every 14, totaling 80 hours, with every other Friday off. The role may involve travel to flight lines and working in aircraft hangars; some positions require boarding and exiting aircraft. Travel is approximately 5%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and nine years of commercial fixed-wing transport-category airplane fuselage structural analysis experience; or a graduate degree and seven years of such experience; or, in lieu of a degree, at least 13 years of such experience.
  • Ability to analyze static strength of aircraft structures using classical methods and publicly available data.
  • Advanced knowledge of finite element analysis using Femap and MSC Nastran for FAA projects.
  • Ability to review engineering design data using CAD and PLM software.
  • Familiarity with FAA and military airworthiness requirements for static strength.
  • Ability to travel to and from flight lines and work in aircraft hangar environments; some positions require the ability to board and exit aircraft.
  • Willingness and ability to travel (5%).
  • Excellent computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Experience with NX and Teamcenter.
  • Skill in automating calculations using VBA in Excel or another programming language.
  • Experience in engineering leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Use classical hand analysis and create finite element models to predict internal loads, displacements, and stresses for complex structures.
  • Collaborate with design engineers on aircraft modifications and installations and ensure designs meet airworthiness requirements.
  • Generate free-body diagrams and calculate internal loads and stresses.
  • Develop structural tests and post-process results to establish allowable strength data.
  • Document structural analysis in formal reports demonstrating compliance with airworthiness requirements.
  • Manage assigned work within scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Mentor and lead other engineers performing structural analysis.
  • Estimate engineering labor hours for formal bids and manage labor forecasts for a small team of engineers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
