Sr. Specialist, Structural (Stress) Engineer

L3Harris Technologies•Greenville, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a Stress Engineer to join its Aeronautical Systems Engineering team. The role analyzes aircraft structures using classical and finite element methods, including developing free body diagrams, calculating internal loads and stresses, and documenting static-strength margins of safety. The position also leads and mentors a small team of stress engineers, manages team budget and schedule performance, supports engineering estimates for bids, and contributes to monthly labor forecasts. The position is on-site and may be based in Greenville, Rockwall, or Plano, Texas. The schedule is 9/80: employees work 9 out of every 14 days, totaling 80 hours, and have every other Friday off. Travel is approximately 5%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and six years of commercial fixed-wing transport-category airplane fuselage structural analysis experience; or a graduate degree and four years of that experience; or, in lieu of a degree, at least ten years of that experience.
  • Ability to analyze static strength of aircraft structures using classical methods and publicly available data.
  • Advanced knowledge of applying finite element analysis with Femap and MSC Nastran for FAA projects.
  • Familiarity with FAA and military airworthiness requirements for static strength.
  • Ability to travel to and from flight lines and work in aircraft hangars; some positions require boarding and exiting aircraft.
  • Willingness and ability to travel (approximately 5%).
  • Excellent computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Experience with NX and Teamcenter.
  • Skill in automating calculations using VBA in Excel or another programming language.
  • Experience in engineering leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Use classical hand analysis and create finite element models to predict internal loads, displacements, and stresses for complex structures.
  • Collaborate with design engineers on aircraft modifications and installations and ensure designs meet airworthiness requirements.
  • Generate free body diagrams and calculate internal loads and stresses.
  • Develop structural tests and post-process results to establish allowable strength data.
  • Document structural analysis in formal reports demonstrating compliance with airworthiness requirements.
  • Manage assigned work within scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Mentor and lead engineers performing structural analysis.
  • Estimate engineering labor hours for formal bids and manage labor forecasts for a small team.
  • Review engineering design data using CAD and PLM software.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
