La Clínica de La Raza is a nonprofit, community-based health center established in 1971 to address health barriers and improve lives for underserved communities. It operates more than 35 sites across Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano counties. La Clínica’s job-shadowing experience is intended for people interested in healthcare who want to observe professionals, ask questions, and learn about the organization’s culture, processes, and values. It is an observational learning opportunity, distinct from clinical rotations. Participants may observe professionals using software and technology, attend team meetings, tour an office, review relevant project materials, speak with team members about their career paths, and take notes. Shadows should not perform tasks normally handled by paid staff, except briefly as a learning experience. High school students may shadow for a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 25 hours per semester; minors under 18 must be enrolled in school. Adults participating through programs may shadow for up to 40 hours per semester and must provide proof of class requirements, including total hours. Participants may not miss school to complete shadowing hours or shadow parents, guardians, or relatives. Transportation to the observation site is the participant’s or parent/guardian’s responsibility. Required consent, emergency, confidentiality, health-clearance, and other applicable forms and documents must be completed before participation. Participants are expected to maintain professional appearance and follow site-specific attire guidance. Open-toe shoes are prohibited in clinical areas, and specified inappropriate or unsafe clothing is not allowed. Shadows must protect confidential and health information, follow safety and security procedures, report suspected abuse or neglect to a supervisor, and use phones and email for personal matters only on a limited basis.
