La Clínica de La Raza offers a job-shadowing learning experience for people interested in exploring healthcare careers. Participants observe healthcare professionals and learn about the organization’s culture, processes, values, and day-to-day operations. The experience is observational and is distinct from clinical rotations, which focus on skills development and training. Shadows should not perform duties normally handled by paid staff, except briefly for learning purposes. Participants may observe professionals using software and technology, attend team meetings, tour an office, review relevant project materials, speak with team members about their experiences and career paths, and record questions or ideas. High school students may participate for a minimum of 3 and maximum of 25 hours per semester; adults in programs may participate for up to 40 hours per semester. Participants must meet applicable consent, documentation, health-clearance, confidentiality, and safety requirements. Students may not miss school for shadowing hours, participants may not shadow relatives, and transportation to the observation site is the participant’s or parent/guardian’s responsibility. Participants are expected to dress professionally, protect confidential and protected health information, follow safety procedures, and report safety concerns, injuries, or suspected abuse or neglect to a supervisor. Personal phone and email use is limited so it does not interfere with the experience.
