About The Position

The Custodian maintains the cleanliness and sanitation of a congregate shelter serving 600 men and women overcoming homelessness in Downtown Phoenix. The role covers dorms, showers, offices, and communal spaces, including occupied men’s and women’s dorms. It involves handling biohazard materials such as urine, feces, vomit, and occasional blood while using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safety and infection-control protocols. This is a physically demanding, hands-on position requiring reliability, attention to detail, and a positive, can-do attitude. The role offers a full-time, 40-hour workweek, with several schedules available: Wednesday to Sunday, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; or Sunday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Two positions are available for the Sunday-to-Thursday schedule.

Requirements

• Prior experience in a shelter, healthcare, nursing home, or skilled nursing environment is highly preferred.
• Ability to work flexible hours between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., including varied days of the week.
• Reliable, dependable, and punctual.
• Positive, can-do attitude and strong work ethic.
• Comfortable with physically demanding tasks and biohazard cleanup.
• Ability to lift up to 80 pounds and move heavy cleaning equipment up to 80 pounds.
• Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness.
• Ability to bend, stand, walk, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.
• Consistent attendance and a positive attitude are essential.

Responsibilities

• Clean and sanitize dorms, bathrooms, showers, and communal areas.
• Perform biohazard cleanup using appropriate PPE.
• Sweep, mop, dust, polish windows, clean cabinets, and maintain office areas.
• Monitor and restock cleaning supplies as needed.
• Complete tasks efficiently, thoroughly, and according to schedule.
• Adapt to daily operational needs and assist wherever necessary.
• Follow safety and infection-control protocols.
